Gut Dysbiosis: The Root of Most Digestive Issues

What Is Gut Dysbiosis?

Dysbiosis means an imbalance in the gut microbiome. Your microbiome is made up of trillions of bacteria that help digest food, regulate the immune system, protect the gut lining, and communicate with the brain (gut-brain axis). When the system is balanced, digestion runs smoothly, when it is not balanced we often see symptoms often labeled as IBS including:

  • Excess gas

  • Bloating after eating

  • Irregular bowel movements

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Food sensitivities

  • Fatigue or brain fog

Dysbiosis and Inflammation

The microbiome plays a major role in inflammation, when imbalance occurs harmful bacteria may increase, the gut lining can become irritated, and immune activation increases, all contributing to ongoing symptoms - from digestive to systemic.

What Causes Dysbiosis?

Dysbiosis doesn’t happen randomly, it occurs when factors shift the balance of the microbiome, such as antibiotic use, chronic stress, poor digestion (low stomach acid, enzymes), infections or overgrowth, and environmental exposures.

Why Symptoms Persist

If dysbiosis isn’t propery, and completely, addressed the underlying imbalance is still there leading to symptoms that persist, and transient fixes.

An Integrative Approach to Gut Dysbiosis

At Sun Valley Natural Medicine, we focus on understanding how the microbiome is functioning and why imbalance is present. We evaluate digestion, microbial patterns, inflammation, and lifestyle factors that influence gut health. From there, we create a personalized plan that may include supporting digestion, rebalancing gut bacteria, reducing inflammation, and addressing contributing factors like stress or prior disruptions to the microbiome.

The goal is not just to manage symptoms, but to restore a healthier microbial environment so digestion becomes more consistent, resilient, and comfortable over time.
